Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing - Major Supporter
The Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing is responsible for leading the national response to blood borne viruses and sexually transmissible infections (STIs). These are described in four strategies for 2005-2008, i.e. the fifth National HIV/AIDS Strategy, the first National Sexually Transmissible Infections Strategy, the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Strategy, and the National Hepatitis C Strategy. These initiatives are implemented in partnership with researchers, health care professionals, community organisations and others at a cost of approximately $30 million for the financial year 2006-07. Funding of $12.5 million, for the period 2005-2008, has been allocated to undertake a pilot testing program for chlamydia. During 2007-2011, a $9.8 million National STI Prevention Program, which will include a targeted sexual health awareness media campaign, will also be implemented.
